Nestled just east of the infamous Dune Climb in Sleeping Bear is a small pond that seems to always hold surprises. Stare out over Mill Pond long enough and interesting species seem to materialize out of the reeds. This spring, the pond has been home to two Trumpeter Swans that seem to be setting up shop for the summer and a Cattle Egret has been hanging out looking a little forlorn for the past week. If you park at Little Glen Lake Park across the street, you can also walk the road to the north and pick up many warbler species including the ubiquitous Northern Waterthrush. After you pass the wetland, you will arrive at an open meadow environment that usually is good for both Grasshopper Sparrows and Clay-colored Sparrows. The setting amongst the dunes is very unique and a trip there is always worth the effort.
