Ther 4th Annual Leelanau Peninsula Birding Festival wrapped-up just last Sunday. Despite a few “slow” locations on afternoon field trips, the overall festival species count was up this year. 120 species were recorded over our 11 offered trips, including American Bittern and Kirtland’s Warbler. That is up from previous years’ counts, in the low 100’s. Also showing good numbers, the registrations: 81 birders paid to participate, slightly down from last year, but for the first time far more birders came from out of county and from out of state, than from the local area. A strong measure of success and the spreading word. Birders registered from as far away as Washington State, Utah, Colorado, Missouri, Illinois, Ohio, and Ontario. The Leelanau BirdFest has gone international! Look to our web-site for all of next year’s plans and up-dates beginning Oct 1st. ….. www.mibirdfest.com …….
